We Played the Halo Theme Song!

So, I’m in our high school band. At the beginning of the semester, I had realized that I desperately wanted us to play the Halo theme song. I pestered the hell out my teacher for weeks, and he finally ordered it, then I harassed him every day until it arrived. We finally played it in front of an audience, and I had my mom record it. Now, it was just with my handycam, so the sound quality is a little sub-par. That, and we suck. But, it was still a really cool geeking-out moment to finally hear us playing that wonderful tune. The cool part starts at about 1:45, when we sing that iconic choir part. Although, the kid on baritone is pretty loud during that part. And if you’re wondering, I’m the red-faced kid with the faux-hawk playing the trumpet that my mother kept zooming in on.

LISTEN WITH HEADPHONES. It makes it sound infinitely better.

Here it is: (be gentle)

Music Monday: Friday (What?)

 Cale Mckee

So, everyone’s aware of the “viral YouTube sensation” Rebecca Black. No, I’m not kidding, people have been calling her that. While Black has received endless amounts of ridicule regarding her song “Friday”, noone can deny that she’s also received the level of fame she was aiming for. I’m not going to delve into whether the amount of shit she’s taking is justified or not — I mean seriously, we’ve all made some stupid stuff at her age — but I’m gonna show you the greatest use of that song yet.

Jimmy Fallon announced on his show that if his viewers raised over $26,000 to go towards aid in Japan, that Stephen Colbert would sing “Friday” on his show. Lo and behold, the goal was reached, and this was the glorious result:

Besides the fact that it was a hilarious bit, I want to commend Colbert and Fallon on that little performance; it was a nice gesture towards Black. I don’t know how I’d handle this level of hatred (not criticism) towards something of mine at that age. I mean, I’ve made some absolutely pointless, retarded shit in the past, and this kind of reaction would have destroyed me. Colbert had some fun with it, all while avoiding the destruction of a kid’s hopes, dreams and soul. Good on ‘em.

Music Monday: Lamb of God

Lamb of God Sacrament

Now, a little while back, I was proud to consider myself a massive metalhead. I’d listen to the heaviest, darkest, most brutal music you could imagine, and I was loving it. Mr. Murtagh was responsible for this, as he had convinced me to give Every Time I Die a listen, which kick-started this love for palm-muting and double-bassiness. Eventually, while browsing through the slough of generic “Kill the ______” indie metal albums, I stumbled across a huge, almost mainstream little group known as Lamb of God.

(I Fail At) Music Monday: Tegan & Sara

Connor Murtagh

Okay, so basically I completely forgot that today is in fact not just Monday but Music Monday. Therefore, it is late at night and practically almost Tuesday and I have not written a music feature. Following me? I’m too tired to think up a respectable article on a favorite band of mine and I’ve been informed by Cale (who is apparently the Chief around here) that there is NO WAY I can write the article on a Tuesday. Probably something to do with the title of this feature and for the sake of alliteration. Anyways, I have cut corners and simply copied and pasted an older article of mine from a different site. The following band was very big with me at the time and I continue to enjoy their work. And even though a large chunk of this article is just a bunch of introduction… I present, Tegan and Sara:
